Library Circulation Policy
Library cards are free of charge to borrowers with proper identification which includes photo identification and proof of current address.
Children must be accompanied by a parent with proper identification.
Individuals may apply for a card online or in person at any Onondaga County public library.
A valid Onondaga County Public Library card can be used at any public library in the County.
The library must be notified of lost or stolen cards and changes of address.
An OCPL library card or identification with name and address is required to sign out materials.
Borrowers are responsible for all materials borrowed on their card.
Parents or guardians are responsible for materials borrowed on their children’s cards.
You are responsible for all materials borrowed on your card.
Parents and guardians of minors are responsible for materials borrowed on their children’s cards.
A change of address or lost or stolen cards must be reported immediately to the library, because materials borrowed on an unreported lost or stolen card remain the responsibility of the cardholder.
Where Your Card is Honored
An Onondaga County Public Library (OCPL) card may be used at the Central Library downtown, at the branch and satellite libraries in Syracuse and at the independent suburban libraries in Onondaga County.
The loan period for most Fairmount Library materials is three weeks. The loan period for most Fairmount Community Library DVDs is one week.
Materials borrowed from any library in the Onondaga County Public Library System may be returned to the Fairmount Community Library unless subject to special local restrictions.
Likewise, materials borrowed from Fairmount Community Library may be returned to any library in Onondaga County Public Library system unless subject to special local restrictions.
Renewals are allowed twice on most items unless another patron is waiting for them or they are subject to other special restrictions.
Patrons may renew items online, in person or by telephone by dialing 315-487-8933.
Renewals cannot be done by e-mailing the library.
Most library materials borrowed from one OCPL library may be returned to any other OCPL library in Onondaga County.
Overdue fines of .20 cents per day per item are assessed on items which are more than one day late.
The maximum overdue fine per item is $10.00.
For lost or severely damaged items, the account is charged with our replacement fee.
Fine schedules may vary between suburban member libraries.
Accounts with unpaid fines and/or other charges of $50.00 and above will be turned over to the library’s collection agency, Unique Management Services, Inc. This includes unpaid fines on returned items.
A service charge of $10.00 will be added to the account balance.
An overdue notice is mailed to your home address when an item is two weeks late.
A final notice is mailed two weeks after that.
Borrowing privileges, including using the Public Internet access computers, are suspended when the balance on the card reaches $10.00 or more.
Managing Your Library Account
With your library card number and your own PIN (Personal Identification Number), you may access information online about your library account. Using a library catalog terminal, select the feature “Look At Your Library Record.” Or you can visit the library’s Web site at www.onlib.org, click on “Catalog” and select “My Account.”
You will see a complete list of items checked out on your card and their due dates. You’ll also see if you have any late items, fines owed and any reserved items waiting for you.
By providing us with your e-mail address, you will receive notifications of hold information, overdue notices and status of your items currently out.
